Where a Supershield or Shield pitch is preferred to the All-seasons pitch, some sort of covering will be needed each winter for the football clubs. Instead of covering with dirt, sand or trying to grow grass over the pitch, Maddocks Sports winter pitch covers are a great solution.
Maddocks Sports offers two versions of these winter covers;
- In Metro Melbourne – One-piece covers
- Outside Metro Melbourne – Multi-piece covers
ONE-PIECE COVERS (Metro Melbourne area)
These covers are laid in one piece, cut to the size of the pitch. They are made from a thick, soft 40mm pile grass with lots of curly fibres. The cover is filled with a mix of sand and rubber granules, to give it enough weight and softness for all winter codes.
The covers are big, and become quite heavy, so all rolling and handling is done using our hydraulic roller machine and crane-truck. We can only offer this service around metro Melbourne area.
The covers cost $3,700, plus $650 for installation and sand/rubber infill, for a pitch up to 26 metres in length. The cost will be higher for longer pitches.
You would also have the core or spindle to roll it up on, at $980. The spindle is essential so we can roll up the cover with our machine, and unroll it onto the pitch ready for footy season.
So all up each cover installed with spindle costs $5,330 plus GST.
These covers are quite expensive initially, but will last for many years, and must be better than covering pitches with dirt each winter. You will not have the thatch build-up around your pitches any more, or the cost of scraping away the soil, re-sodding etc.
Since all handling is by machine, the covers should last much longer than the old multi-piece covers you may have had in the past.

MULTI-PIECE COVERS (outside Melbourne)
These covers are made from the same material, but are cut into 3 or 4 sections, which are easier to roll up and lift.
We have sold hundreds of these covers over the last 20 years, to regional and interstate areas.
We usually cut the cover to the exact shape of your cricket pitch, then load the cover on a pallet, along with the bags of rubber you will need, and road-freight it to you. Simple instructions are provided for clubs to install the cover, and how to roll, remove and re-fit each year.
The cover is laid over the pitch, lightly sanded (to add weight), and then filled with soft-fall granulated rubber particles. This provides the soft, spongy feel. At the end of winter the cover is simply swept off, split into sections, and rolled up to be stored for summer. When installing in subsequent years, some top-up granulated rubber and sand may need to be added.
Price for these covers is $3,590.00 plus GST (approx. 60 sq. metre pitch, 1.8m width, includes rubber infill material; larger pitches to be quoted)
